Rani Mukerji, in her career spanning two decades, performed a variety of roles, many of which were rejected by other actresses. Remember how the character of Tina in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was molded with Twinkle Khanna in mind? She got the role after several rounds of auditions!

She has been the Mardaani of Bollywood and now, she is back on the screen with Hichki, another movie with a strong female character. We take a look at 5 times she celebrated girl power on screen.

Limitations imposed by her Voice – The makers of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai had initially thought to dub Rani’s voice for the film where she narrates the story of how she met Anjali’s father, played by SRK. However, it was decided to go ahead with her original voice. And the audience noticed it, yet loved her performance in the movie.

Rani Mukerji’s tryst with the Khans – Rani worked with the three Khans early on in her career. Prior to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Best Movie of Rani Mukerji), she was also known as “Khandala Girl” because of the song “Aati Kya Khandala” from their film Ghulam, which was a raging hit. She worked with Salman in movies like “Kahin Pyar Na Ho Jaye”, again a commercial hit. In spite of it, her performance was praised.

No fear of Failure – Rani’s earlier movies was disasters at the BO, so much so that she was advised to quit! But, she kept choosing films good in content. Even though films like Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat and Mehndi were flops, they did deal with the social cause of rape and dowry deaths. And Rani does not regret those choices. She encountered this later in her career too but continued unabated. Her films “No One Killed Jessica” and “Dil Bole Hadippa” dealt with themes uncommon in Hindi films. Glamour and Elegance – Though she was touted to be the second lead in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, she was highly appreciated for her performance and the aura she brought on screen. It was a glamorous role, but with a substance. Rani Mukherjee won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for the role. She is taken to be in the league of Vidya Balan when it comes to shouldering the entire film on her shoulders.

Mardaani – At a time when people considered her career to be officially over, she was back with a bang (quite literally) with Mardaani where she played a Shivani Shivaji Roy, a Maharashtrian policewoman involved in a kidnapping case that leads her to uncover secrets of human trafficking in India. The film was successful and apart from receiving Best Actress nominations, Rani Mukherjee also stressed a lot on the need for harnessing the power in girls and equipping them to fight.
