Iconic Bollywood Actress Sridevi: Lesser known facts about her film career!

Sridevi was only beginning to reach her full stride as an actor but she passed away at the age of 54. She was a shy person off-cam, but the moment she was in front of the camera, she lighted a thousand bulbs with her magnetic charm. She’s one of those actresses who formed her own school without really going to an acting school with a retinue of Bollywood divas finding in their very own “Sridevi ma’am” an inspirational figure to look up to and emulate. Here are some unknown facts about Sridevi .

Bollywood debut Solva Sawan

Sridevi marked her Bollywood debut in the year 1979. The film was titled `Solva Sawan`. She melted many hearts with her performances and went on to be recognized as the `first female superstar`.  Directed by P. Bharathiraja, the movie starred Amol Palekar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda in important roles along with Sridevi.

A child artist at the age of four

She did films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam industries before she marked her debut in Bollywood. As a child artist, she made her Bollywood debut with 1975 film `Julie`. At the age of four , she did a role in M.A. Thirumugham’s devotional `Thunaivan`  and continued to work in South-Indian films for several years as a child artist.

First Filmfare award
Sridevi won a truckload of awards in her career for her performances in a number of films. Sridevi won her first `Filmfare Award for Best Actress - Tamil` for film `Meendum Kokila` in the year 1982. And she won her first Filmfare Best Actress award in 1984,  for her film `Sadma` which starred Kamal Haasan as the male lead. Directed by Balu Mahendra, the film is a remake of his own Tamil Film `Moondram Pirai`.

First Hindi blockbuster film

In 1979, after her debut with `Solva Sawan`  opposite Jeetendra, the duo were paired again in the film `Himmatwala` in 1983. The film went on to become the blockbuster of the year. The song `Naino Me Sapna` became the rage. Sridevi`s bejeweled outfit in the song totally stole the show. Composed by disco king Bappi Lahiri the music album won million hearts. The actress starred in several films like `Mawaali`, `Maqsad` and `Justice Chaudhry` forming a popular onscreen pair with Jeetendra.

She was suffering from fever while shooting a song

Iconic Bollywood Actress  Sridevi was passionate about her profession and hence she used to put all efforts in while she was working on a film. While shooting one of the most loved songs of the actress, the rain song `Na Jane Kaha Se Aayi Hai` from the film `ChaalBaaz` she was suffering from high fever. Reportedly, she had a fever of 103 degrees, however, she still completed the shoot. The film is the remake of 1973 Indian movie `Seeta Aur Geeta` starring Sridevi in a double role. The film also starred Sunny Deol and Rajinikanth in pivotal roles.

Power-packed comeback

After almost 15 years of hiatus, Sridevi was back to what she loves, doing films. As a middle-class wife in the film `English Vinglish`, Sridevi gave a brilliant performance. She was appreciated for the same from all quarters. She was even nominated for the Best Actress award at most of the award ceremonies, including the Filmfare awards, where she received her ninth nomination for Best Actress. Helmed by Gauri Shinde, the story revolves around a housewife who joins an English speaking class to stop her husband and daughter mocking her lack of English skills.

The tinsel town, where she became a face that Indians of any generation can recognize so easily! The south cinema where she started her illustrious career, they all will miss one of the biggest superstars of the era!
