Socha Na Tha (2005)–

The Imtiaz Ali directorial debut has completed 12 years and remains one of the most sought-after romantic films. It marked the debut of Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia. You will love the way the love story unfolds between two strangers-turned friends-turned lovers-turned elopers.

Lamhe (1991)–

This Sridevi classic sets a tone different from other movies of the time. Playing a double role, Sridevi plays mother-daughter duo while Anil Kapoor plays Viren, a guy who falls in love with Sridevi. However, his love is not reciprocated and she dies post giving birth to a daughter. Destiny takes a different path when the daughter falls in love with Viren, who is 20 years older than her. Sridevi won the Filmfare Best Actress award for her dual role while the film features in Outlook’s list of Bollywood best romantic movies.

Sadma (1983)–

Another Sridevi starrer, the film was a remake of the Tamil film Moondram Pirai which also starred the lead pair and was directed by the same director Balu Mahendra. The love story is sweet, simple and innocent but the climax will make you cry. Sridevi plays a young girl who suffers from retrograde amnesia after an accident and behaves like a child. Kamal Haasan rescues her from a brothel she accidentally lands up in and takes her to his place, taking care of her without any carnal desires whatsoever. However, once she is cured, she fails to recognize him and leaves for her hometown. The film was a box office failure when it released, but has since attained a cult status.

Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994)–

This Kundan Shah film is probably Shah Rukh Khan’s most underrated films. SRK has said over the years that the movie is his all-time favorite. He also charged just Rs 25000 for the film. Depicting one-sided love where the hero is a loser, it was way different from most 90s films. SRK plays Sunil, a music enthusiast and an outcast who falls for Anna (Suchitra Krishnamoorthi) and tries his best to woo her. However, she is in love with Chris (Deepak Tijori). The film also stars Naseeruddin Shah.

Cheeni Kum (2007)–

Starring Tabu and Amitabh Bachchan, the film tells the love story of a 34 year old woman and a 64 year old man. Things get out of hand when Paresh Rawal, who plays Tabu’s father and is actually younger than her boyfriend, stands against the match. The film is quirky and light-hearted and will impress you a whole lot.

Fire (1996)–

Depicting a homosexual love story, the film stars Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das. They play sisters-in-law, but are actually unhappy with their respective husbands. They become lovers and are shunned by the society. However, they stand their ground and break patriarchal notions.

The Lunchbox (2013)–

This Irfan Khan-Nimrat Kaur starrer earned a lot of praises and awards all over the globe. It also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a significant role. The two characters never meet but are united by a letter the wife sends for her husband which is accidentally delivered to another man. The film follows their lonely lives and how they look forward to their mutual letters via a lunchbox.

Wake Up Sid (2009)–

If you are confused about love and career, watch this film. Starring the unlikely pair of Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma, the film was Ayan Mukherjee’s directorial debut and has been widely appreciated for a poignant portrayal of a young, rich brat’s acknowledgment of taking responsibility of his own life while sharing a flat with a woman older than him and in search of her own path.

Qarib Qarib Singelle (2017)–

Irfan Khan created magic in this film with Parvathy who made her debut in Bollywood with the film. A love story set in the age of dating apps, the two characters fall in love on a journey around the country. Watch it for its relatable content and for the realistic depiction of Raj. This Raj, unlike that of DDLJ, is bold and colourful. Both the characters overcome their own sordid past while on the journey.

Kareeb (1999)–

Though not as popular as other films on the list, this Bobby Deol and Shabana Raza film was directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Not many know that Shabana was given the screen name Neha by Chopra. This was also her name in this film. It also features Shammi Kapoor in an important role. Watch it for its splendid music and simple, sweet love story and soothing music.
